The Trochetia Boutoniana: A winter rarity on Le Morne 🌺

Mauritius is home to exceptional natural heritage, and among its most symbolic treasures is the Trochetia Boutoniana, the national flower of Mauritius.
This striking red flower is endemic to the island and grows naturally on the volcanic slopes of Le Morne Brabant, as from 350 meters above sea level. Its habitat is extremely specific, limited to steep and exposed areas where very few plants can survive.
A Seasonal Bloom 🌺
The Trochetia Boutoniana only flourishes during winter. Cooler temperatures and seasonal conditions allow it to bloom for a short period each year. Outside of winter, the plant remains present but discreet, often unnoticed.
Winter is therefore the only season when hikers may be lucky enough to see it in bloom.
Le Morne: More Than a Summit ⛰️
Le Morne Brabant is best known for its history, dramatic landscapes, and panoramic views over the lagoon. The hike to the summit is a rewarding experience in itself, combining physical challenge, cultural significance, and raw natural beauty.
Along the route, attentive hikers may encounter the Trochetia Boutoniana growing naturally on the mountainside. Seeing the beautiful flower is only possible in winter when it blooms.
